Minis Monday: Star Hammer Tactics
PlayStation Minis seem to be forgotten among the crowd of retail and PSN games that are released every week. Even though Minis are priced at a very small fee too many of these games become hidden gems. Hidden gems that, quite frankly, not enough people get to experience. As a way to give these games more coverage we bring you “Minis Monday”. Every week we’ll be introducing you to and reviewing a new Minis game. Hopefully this way more people will learn of some of the truly amazing Minis available right now.
In all honesty I’ve actually been meaning to get to reviewing this game for a couple of months now. However there’s been a lot of difficulty getting a hold of a UK PSN card so I’ve had to put this review off until now. That being said this week and next we’ll be bringing you review for two Minis game that are not available in the US store.
Star Hammer Tactics is described as being a “fast-paced tactical battle game that anyone can learn to play in minutes”. In my experience with tactics games that I’ve played in the past this usually isn’t the case. However with Star Hammer Tactics not only is this the case but it’s pretty darn fun too. Going through the campaign of the game will have you play through a set of different scenarios where you’ll gain control over a fleet of different types of space ships. Some ships have missiles to enable long range attacks while other can only attack from short range. You’re given forty five seconds per turn and each ship is given ten action points at which they can use to move or fire missiles. Each scenario usually lasts no longer than five minutes and later levels can prove to be quite challenging.
I’m actually quite fond of the idea of a tactics games on the Minis platform. To my knowledge there really isn’t any other Minis game that features gameplay like this. One of my big points with Minis is how they should be games that you can play in short bursts. Star Hammer Tactics is great for picking up for a few minutes and playing through a level. There might not be as deep a system involved as is with other larger tactics games but that’s exactly the point. This is the tactics formula transferred to a Minis game. Besides the campaign there’s a full back story that will fill you in on the universe and a skirmish mode where you can battle either the AI or against another player. And even though there’s only one song in the game you can tell a lot of work went into building it.
Ultimately I really think this is a Minis title that people should check out if they have access to the EU PSN store. It’s unique in comparison to other Minis out there and can prove to be a lot of fun if you get into it. People who are experts at tactics games may be wary at first because for the most part there’s not a deep system of mechanics in the game but the AI does prove quite challenging which should be enough for most people. Star Hammer Tactics may not be the best Minis game out there but it’s something people should check out and it gives me hope that we’ll see more Minis that offer unique and easy to pick up and play games.
